Two PSU-OUS Professors Travel to China


Upon invitation of the Jiangsu Province International Economic Cooperation Bureau, People's Republic of China, Prof. Rolando B. Cerezo, Campus Dean of PSU-Binmaley and Program Chairman of the MS Aquaculture/ MAq of the Open University Systems visited the cities of Nanjing and Ganyu from September 24-27, 2006 and toured several marine and fishery establishments there. The tour was hosted by the Ganyu Marine and Fishery Bureau of China with the main objective of forging a possible cooperation on fishery projects and to strengthen the exchange of fishery technology between the two countries.

Prof. Cerezo also visited the Jiangsu Marine Biotechnology Laboratory of the Huaihai University in Lianyungang City. Prof. Yan Binlun, Director of the Laboratory and Deputy President of the Ocean College of the University also offered possible cooperation on faculty and student exchange between Huaihai University and PSU.

The travel expenses of Prof. Cerezo was funded by the PSU Development Foundation Inc. and the CHED-COE Program. The host country shouldered all his accommodation expenses during the one-week tour.

Dr. Rosie S. Abalos, the Chairman of the Fisheries Sciences Department of PSU-Binmaley Campus and OUS mobile professor, presented her research paper entitled: "Resource Productivity and Profitability of Milkfish (Chanos chanos, Forskal) Cage Aquaculture in the Coastal Areas of Lingayen Gulf, Philippines" during the 2nd International Symposium on Cage Aquaculture in Asia (CAA2) held at Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, China on July 3-8, 2006. Her attendance to said international symposium has given her the opportunity to interact, network and collaborate with fish culturists, researchers, traders and planners in terms of identifying problems on recent advances on cage culture in Asia and in other regions worldwide.

This symposium was organized by the Asian Fisheries Society, Zhejiang University, China, China Society of Fisheries, Department of Science and Technology of Zhejiang Province and the Bureau of Ocean and Fisheries of Zhejiang Province with support from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and other sponsors. It was attended by 269 participants from Australia, Bahrain Islands, Bangladesh, Canada, Chile, China, Egypt, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Iran, Italy, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Nepal, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Philippines, Puerto Rica, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Thailand, United Arab Emirates, USA, Vietnam, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

This international travel of Dr. Abalos was made possible through grants from CHED-Office of Policy, Planning, Research and Information, Manila with counterparts from the University Administration and PSU Development Foundation Inc.
